Assam's Flora (Present Status of Vascular Plants)

Cover FloraThis Book embodies status of Vascular Plants of the present circumscription of Assam. It is the first of its kind for the enumeration of all the species consisting of the Fern Allies & Ferns; the Gymnosperms and the Angiosperms with both the Dicotyledones and Monocotyledones. The gap that remains in U.N. Kanjilal et al's Flora of Assam (Present North East Region, 1934-40) for non-inclusion of Pteridophytes, Monocotyledones except Gramineae (N.L. Bor 1940, Vth Vol. of Flora of Assam) and most of the herbaceous species of Dicotyledones has been filled up.

The Book contains an enumeration of 4273 species with latest botanical Nomenclature comprising 272 Families belonging to 1448 Genera. These include 40 species of Fern Allies; 315 species of Ferns; 23 species of Gymnosperms and in Angiosperms 2823 species of Dicotyledones and 1072 species of Monocotyledones. The details of the study of Past and Present botanical explorations/ collections; Geology; Soil and Climate; the Vegetation types; Statistical analysis of floristic elements are presented along with the significant features of the flora dealing separately with introductory accounts of the Pteridophytes; the Gymnosperms; the Primitive Angiosperms; the Orchids (Terrestrials both Autrotopic and Saprophytic; the Epiphytes) and the Endemics. Up-to-date accounts of Plant wealth are presented category wise as Timber yielding; Medicinals; Bamboos and Canes; Wild Edible Fruits; Vegetables; Fibre yielding; Food for herbivores, plants used in sericulture and minor forest produces as Dye yielding, tanning and stupefying fishes. List of endangered and exotics in the flora of Assam have also been provided and recommended for introduction of wild plants in Parks and Gardens.

Arrangement of the Families of Vascular Plants in the Herbarium has been provided in Appendix I.

The Book is well illustrated with a number of colour Photographs.
