About the Book :
The report is practically the first official document on the status of environment of the state. It has been prepared by Assam Science Technology & Environment Council (ASTEC) as the State Host Institution under the guidance and close coordination with the Environment Protection Training & Research Institute (EPTRI), Hyderabad as the National Host Institute.
The report provides a picture of the bio-physical and socio-economic condition and an understanding of how various anthropogenic activities have affected the overall environmental scenario of the state. The report has been compiled adopting the internationally recognized Pressure-State-Impact-Response methodology. The report covers the priority issues pertaining to the state which intends to provide a benchmark for future environmental reporting and also to serve as the database for policy makers in framing various environmental management plans and programmes. It is also intended to accumulate the data lying scattered in the archives of various government departments and agencies and bring them under one umbrella.
The State of Environment Report has Fifteen (15) chapters. It begins with the historical background of Assam followed by administrative and ecological setup, physical base, demographic features covered between chapters 1 to 4. Chapter 5 deals with the resource base of the state which includes, water resource (surface & ground water), forest resources and mineral resources. Chapter 6, 7and 8 deals with disaster management aspects, biological diversity and the agricultural allied sectors of the state respectively. These are followed by chapters on energy resources, industries, transport and tourism & heritage potentials of Assam. The health scenario, urban development process and the institutional frameworks make up rest of the chapters.
